With so many colors of lipsticks and glosses on the market, the four colors that pop off the charts are: blue, red, orange and purple. Although other colors look glamorous, and help define your mouth, if you truly want your lips to sizzle and pop, go with a neon blue, red, orange or purple.
Lipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that apply color, texture and protection to the lips. Lips are such a visual body part that the brighter the lip, the more you’ll create a look that is trendy and hip.
Lipstick Fun Fact: Ancient Americas oldest manual from the 13th century “The Grolier Codex” shows two Mayan women wearing lipstick. Ancient Sumerian men and women were possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick, about 5,000 years ago. They crushed gemstones and used them to decorate their faces, mainly on the lips and around the eyes.

Lip coloring started to gain popularity in 16th-century England. During the time of Queen Elizabeth I, bright red lips and a stark white face became fashionable. Carmine dye was extracted from cochineal, scale insects native to Mexico and Central America which live on cactus plants. Carminic acid, which forms 17% to 24% of the weight of the dried insects, can be extracted from the insects’ bodies and eggs. Mixed with aluminum or calcium salts, it makes carmine dye (also known as cochineal).

Lips Fun Fact: The upper and lower lips are referred to as the “Labium superius oris” and “Labium inferius oris”. The juncture where the lips meet the surrounding skin of the mouth area is the vermilion border, and the typically reddish area within the borders is called the vermilion zone. The vermilion border of the upper lip is known as the cupid’s bow. The fleshy protuberance located in the center of the upper lip is a tubercle known by various terms including the procheilon, the “tuberculum labii superioris” and the “labial tubercle”. The vertical groove extending from the procheilon to the nasal septum is called the philtrum.

Throughout the early 20th century, lipstick came in a limited number of shades. Dark red was one of the most popular shades throughout the 19th and 20th century. At that time, it was acceptable to apply lipstick in public and during lunch, but never at dinner.
