A blouse is an upper garment that was formerly worn by workmen, peasants, artists, women and children. A blouse can be gathered at the waist or hips by a waistband or belt so that is hangs loosely over the wearer’s body. Today, the term blouse most commonly refers to a girl’s or woman’s dress shirt. A blouse often times blouses out or has an unmistakably feminine appearance.

Blouse Fun Fact: Blouse is a loanword to English from French: ‘blouse’ means ‘dust coat’. The term was brought back to the English from travels by French Crusaders. The derivation may also be from ‘wool’, ‘blouso’ and ‘short wool’ (Provencal dialect).

Blouses are a popular staple in women’s fashion because they can either dress up an outfit, or taper an outfit down, depending on the cut, style and material of the blouse. A silk ruffled blouse worn with skinny jeans can add a casual flair to the outfit, while a cotton, button-up blouse worn with a pencil skirt can doll up the outfit.

Blouses are historically a cask style, mostly mail-like garment, that were rarely part of the fashionable woman’s wardrobe until the 1890s. Many fashionable blouse styles of both the 1970s and 1980s were on the go again after the millennium in the blouse fashion: double cuffs, extra wide pointed collar, belt around the waist, synthetic fibers and the like. Often the blouses had embroidery, especially on the collar and string. Blouses with the three-quarter arm sleeve were a striking phenomenon of the 1990s.
