Cosmetics have been around for thousands of years. Egyptian men and women used makeup to enhance their appearance. They were very fond of eyeliner and eye shadows in dark colors including blue, red and black. Ancient Sumerian men and women were possibly the first to invent and wear lipstick, about 5,000 years ago.

Eye Shadow Fun Fact: Eye shadow is a cosmetic that is applied on the eyelids and under the eyebrows. Eye shadow is commonly used to make the wearer’s eyes stand out and look more attractive. Eye shadow can add depth and dimension to one’s eyes, complement the eye color, make one’s eyes appear larger, or simply draw attention to the eyes. Eye shadow comes in many different colors and textures and is usually made from a powder and mica, but can also be found in liquid, pencil, cream and mousse form.

Lipstick Fun Fact: Lipstick is a cosmetic product containing pigments, oils, waxes and emollients that apply color, texture and protection to the lips. Many colors and types of lipstick exist. As with most other types of makeup, lipstick is typically, but not exclusively, worn by women. Some lipsticks are also lip balms, to add color and hydration.

For a lipstick that looks dry and sultry, go with a matte lipstick. For lips that shimmer and shine with a wet look, go with a lip gloss.

Eye shadow can be applied in a wide variety of ways, depending upon the desired look and formulation. Typically application is done using fingers and brushes. Lipstick is generally applied with a brush or through a tube.

Color Fun Fact: There is no denying that colors on the face bring out warmth, beauty, and simply radiate. Color is the characteristic of human visual perception described through color categories, with names such as red, blue, yellow, green, orange and purple. This perception of color derives from the stimulation of cone cells in the human eye by electromagnetic radiation in the spectrum of light. Color categories and physical specifications of color are associated with objects through the wavelength of the light that is reflected from them. This reflection is governed by the object’s physical properties such as light absorption, emission spectra, etc.

Cosmetics Fun Fact: In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates cosmetics, defines cosmetics as “intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body’s structure or functions.” This broad definition includes any material intended for use as a component of a cosmetic/makeup product. The FDA specifically excludes soap from this category.

Eye Shadow Fun Fact: Many people use eye shadow simply to improve their appearance, but it is also commonly used in theatre and plays, to create a memorable look, with bright colors. Depending on skin tone and experience, the effect of eye shadow usually brings out glamour and gains attention. Common ingredients in eye shadows consist of talc, mica, sericite, magnesium stearate, colorants and preservatives.

Lipstick Fun Fact: Throughout the early 20th century, lipstick came in a limited number of shades. Dark red was one of the most popular shades throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. In the early 1930s, Elizabeth Arden began to introduce different lipstick colors. She inspired other companies to create a variety of lipstick shades. By the 1970s, a number of cosmetic companies introduced lipsticks in more unusual colors such as light blue, frosted lime green and silver sparked navy blue. Black lipsticks became popular in the late 1970s and into the 1990s. Today? You can typically find most any color of your choice at cosmetic lipstick counters!

In addition to eye shadows and lipsticks, common cosmetics include mascara, eyeliner, foundation, blush/rouge, skin cleansers, skin lotions, shampoo, hairstyling products (gel, hair spray, etc.) perfume and cologne.
